Week Seven – Reflection

This week in media Reece and I worked on getting our shots done then editing them into movie maker. Then Reece re-drew the storyboard to make it more easy and clear to read. Once we had all our images into a movie with page transitions we searched for a song to suit our story. We did choose one which was ‘Spotlight – MuteMath’ which for some reason isn’t working on the final movie ..

I have learnt a lot about media this semester, when I first came into class I wasn’t sure what we would be learning. I learnt a lot about the advertisers, the different types of media and what to and not to do on internet sites. I think Cliff is a great teacher, he explains a lot and helps me understand what media really is.

Week Six – Social Media and Cyber Bullying (CS2)

During this week in media Reece and I have created a new storyboard. Our new story is about a boy in class who is bored and decides to draw a picture which then comes to life. We have taken half the shots and are almost finished our new story.

^^ In the link above the article is about a 14-year old girl who committed suicide because of cyber bullying.

My opinion on this article is that it is horribly sad that this little girl, hardly seen the world and had a life still ahead of her, decided to kill herself because of the comments and posts she had been getting from people online.

The people who did this obviously knew that they where upsetting her because they just kept doing it. If they knew when enough was enough then maybe the situation would have had a different outcome. I bet that they never meant for something like this to happen that they were ‘joking around’ but how could that be the case when it was so continuous? Now after hearing what she has done to herself I’d imagine they would be so embarrassed and ashamed, upset and sorry. Well it’s too late now, but it wasn’t a few days or posts ago. They should have thought about this before they even wrote the first comment.

Firstly by posting those comments and writing those things about her, they knew that it would upset her or at least that’s what they were aiming for. Why would you say things like that on the internet? Because your scared and defenseless when it comes to reality? Why would you say it at all? Sometimes those things can be to much for some people and they might not be able to handle it.

By taunting anyone (through the internet, behind backs, face to face) you don’t know how they will react or how it will truly affect them. Sometimes people act strong although they are dieing inside with every word you may say, even though they are trying to ignore it and not think about it at all.

It was the wrong thing to do in the first place, and the fact that they continued for this long to get to this point shows that the people who done this are cowards and insecure. They need to put someone else down in order for them to feel good about themselves.

The words you say to people could follow them around everywhere they go like in this video ^^making them feel worthless all the time. There is no need for your opinion on someone else if it’s got nothing to do with you.

This week in media me and Reece have made some good progress on our mobile phone tableau’s. We have taken half our shots and looked through them, they could have been better and more relevant to our storyboard so we retook them, more satisfied with our outcome.

In the link above there is an article which talks about Gold Coast high school students creating and joining a hate group against a teacher.

I think that is so wrong. Groups on Facebook are supposed to be made about interests, hobbies, sports or anything else other than hate groups. If the students who joined this group didn’t like the teacher, it doesn’t give them the right to post negative things and threats towards her. Before they joined this group they should have thought about the effect it could have on the teacher and the negative attitude people will see them to have. They should have thought about if a hate group was directed at themselves and if threats and nasty comments towards them were posted how they would feel, because surely it is not something you like have done to you.

The quote “Treat people as you would like to be treated” fits perfectly in this situation. It is something that could send someones self-esteem off-balance, leaving them feeling insecure and scared to try certain things. It could also ruin their social being, loosing confidence and maybe even make them paranoid.

Not to mention she had also been physically abused, and locked in a boys toilet until she cried. Everyone who has joined this group as a joke, or to post and share negative things about this teacher should be embarrassed and ashamed. I know that I don’t know this teacher and for all I know she could be the worst, most rude and horrible teacher but there are some things that people should keep to themselves.

Week Four – Social Media and Privacy

This week in media Reece and I made some good progress in our mobile tabloids. We changed our storyboard a little so that we could take shots during school which was a good idea so that we can work during class time and not out of school. We have taken the first 2 shots and did have some difficulties but manged to get them done.

In the link above ^^ the article talks about 2 teachers being fired over posting photos of themselves dressed as schoolgirls on Facebook.

My opinion on this article is that you must think first about what you are doing and whether it is appropriate. Also think about the consequences and who will be effected by it. Maybe you don’t think about every little thing you do, but when on Facebook you should be careful as it is very public and things can spread fast on this popular social networking website. Sure teachers, and every other person in this world deserves to do what they please in their personal time while off work, but then again everywhere you go and everything you do represents what you do and who you are. So while you may be mucking around, having some fun by taking some joke photos, it will bring up questions as to are you suitable for working with children(or whatever you work with) and if you act appropriately while outside the office. I guess that the principal of the school decided that these teachers were representing the school badly so they have the choice of the consequence, maybe it was a harsh and just some fun but if I were the principal of the school I would probably do the same as it would be embarrassing for the school. If the photos were kept quiet, off the net (where things can be taking and changed to make them seem different from the truth) then it would be a different story and most likely the teachers would still have their jobs.

think about what you do on the net because it can be dangerous and get you into a lot of trouble !

Week Three – Social Media

During week three I had one period of media class. During that 45minute class I did think up one idea of what Reece and I could do for our storyboard on our new task. While this idea was completely random it brought up some possible shots which would tell our story and make sense. When I thought about some ideas, straight away a leprechaun jumped into my head, it was completely random but after thinking about it, we could do a lot with a leprechaun. That was only one idea which we had. Other than that, I missed out on the double period on Thursday which i assume the rest of the class continued on blogs, facebook groups and storyboard ideas.

The best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication.

Here are some examples of social media websites:

* Social Bookmarking. Interact by tagging websites and searching through websites bookmarked by other people. (Twitter, Digg)
* Social News. Interact by voting for articles and commenting on them. (Ninemsn)
* Social Networking. Interact by adding friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and having discussions. (Facebook, MySpace)
* Social Photo and Video Sharing. Interact by sharing photos or videos and commenting on user submissions. (YouTube, Flickr, Photobucket)
* Wikis. Interact by adding articles and editing existing articles. (Wikipedia, Wikia)

On a weekly basis I use social media everyday. I use all types of social media whether I am viewing or posting photos, chatting with friends on facebook, researching for homework, and even right now I am using it, to write a blog.

Social media is everywhere, it is greatly popular and highly entertaining.

Week Two – Mass Media

In media this week we were told about our marks on our blogs and facebook group. My facebook group is about Gossip Girl, the American teen drama. I aimed to make a group which many people are interesting in and would like to know more about, so I thought of a topic which many people can relate to which was television. I then thought of a well known popular tv series of which I can post information about characters, stars, random facts ect. which people can engage in. Mass media refers to media that is designed to be consumed by large audiences through the agencies of technology.

Electronic media and print media include:

Broadcasting, in the narrow sense, for radio and television.
Many instances of various types of recorded discs or tapes. In the 20th century, these were mainly used for music. Video and computer uses followed.
Film, most often used for entertainment, but also for documentaries.
The Internet, which has many uses and presents both opportunities and challenges. Examples can include Blogs and podcasts (such as news, music, pre-recorded speech, and video)
Mobile phones, which can be used for rapid breaking news and short clips of entertainment like jokes, horoscopes, alerts, games, music, and advertising
Publishing, including electronic publishing
Video games, which have developed into a mass form of media since cutting-edge devices such as the PlayStation 3, XBox 360, and Wii broadened their use.

On a weekly basis I use many forms of media which include:

The internet mainly for entertainment and homework research.
My mobile for music, communication and emailing.
Television and radio for entertainment and news.
Magazines or newspapers, mainly for news or gossip and fashion.

Media influence or media effects are terms used in media studies, psychology, communication theory and sociology to refer to the theories about the ways the mass media affect how their audiences think and behave.

Media forms that I use influences me by making me want to buy what they are advertising or displaying because they make me want to look good (clothing, make-up, accessories), be fit (gym memberships, dieting products, exercise equipment), be entertained (gaming consoles, games, movies, music, new technology).
